There is a three-sentence paragraph in funeral home’s price list which hardly anyone reads which could save families thousands of dollars.
Embalming is not required by law. You can buy the casket anywhere and they must accept it for free. The “protective” casket does not protect anyone. What comes back from a cremation is not ash. And when nobody checks, families get handed cement.
Sources: FTC Funeral Rule (16 CFR 453), state codes, federal court opinions, CANA, and the 2023 NFDA price study. Nothing here is legal advice, and funeral law varies by state.
