What Americans Should Know about Data Centers

Posted on June 25, 2026June 25, 2026 by ireporter

Data centers are massive physical warehouses filled with servers that form the backbone of the internet and the Artificial Intelligence/AI revolution.

The Core Infrastructure of Digital Life – Whenever you send an email, stream a show, save photos to the cloud, or prompt an AI chatbot, you are interacting with a data center. There are over 4,000 data centers across the country, with heavy concentrations in states like Virginia, which hosts hundreds of facilities

Unprecedented Demand on Power and the Grid – Data centers run 24/7 and generate immense heat. Cooling systems often consume nearly as much power as the servers themselves. A single “hyperscale” facility (the size of several football fields) can use as much electricity annually as 100,000 homes. Because of the extreme energy required for artificial intelligence, U.S. data center electricity usage is projected to double or triple by 2028

Massive Water Consumption – In addition to electricity, massive amounts of water are required to cool the servers. Mid-sized facilities can use 300,000 gallons of water daily, while large campuses can consume up to 5 million gallons—comparable to the daily usage of a small town

Community and Economic Impact – Citizens frequently raise concerns over noise pollution, the use of large swaths of rural or suburban land, and the potential for strained local water supplies. Furthermore, there are growing worries that grid expansions needed to service these centers could lead to utility rate hikes for everyday households and small businesses
