Ocala Electric Utility is warning residents about a bill payment scam that is targeting utility customers.

OCALA, Fla. (March 29, 2017) – Ocala Electric Utility is warning residents about a bill payment scam that is targeting utility customers.

Individuals and businesses have reported receiving telephone calls or emails that claim their electricity will be turned off within hours, or other threats, unless they make an immediate payment over the phone or meet in-person to make a cash payment. Ocala Electric Utility will never call its customers demanding payment using any prepaid cards or debit cards. OEU also does not cut power to businesses after hours. If customers believe there is a problem with their account, they are encouraged to call 352-629-2489.

It is important to increase awareness about payment scams in general so customers understand the red flags and know what to do.

• Be suspicious of callers who demand immediate payment for any reason.
• Never give out personal or financial information to anyone who calls or emails you.
• Never wire money, provide debit or credit card numbers to someone you don’t know, or meet with a stranger in-person to make a payment.
