Post Nasal Drip Not Caused by Allergies or GERD
There’s posts all over the internet about ENT’s claiming excessive mucus / phlegm / Post Nasal Drip is caused by Allergies or GERD. I strongly disagree with this assessment.
Nine months after getting a Upper Respiratory Infection, I still have excessive mucus / phlegm / Post Nasal Drip. Until I had this Upper Respiratory Infection, my throat felt perfect. Medical professionals are claiming it’s caused by allergies which I haven’t had during my entire life. I don’t have any of the classic allergy symptoms like sneezing, watery eyes or runny nose, which seemed to escape the medical professionals I saw.
I explained to my Primary Physician how the Post Nasal Drip began when I got the Upper Respiratory Infection, how it has continued months afterwards and how I never had allergies. His response was to say “people’s bodies change” and told me to start taking Nasacort & Xyzal, both of which are used to treat Allergy symptoms. IMO, prescribing Allergy medications for someone who has no history of allergies is the wrong treatment.
A ENT I went to claimed it was caused by either GERD or Throat Thrush. I tried taking nystatin oral for Thrush for 2 weeks and it made no difference.
I went to another ENT and he claimed the cause was most likely GERD so he prescribed Omeprazole. I tried taking it and all it did was give me a headache. Also Omeprazole has many dangerous side effects.
I’m in excellent health but this Post Nasal Drip / excessive mucus / phlegm in my throat is maddening.
Here’s more posts I found from other people about post nasal drip –
Per the above post: “Hi everyone. I’ve been struggling with constant post nasal drip and mucus in throat for over 3 years. It really is a head-scratcher. I’m hoping someone here can relate. Here’s my experience with this mysterious and persistent post nasal drip:
It started in March 2020 after a sinus infection lasting 2 months (UK doctors are stingy with antibiotics.) While it’s possible I had covid, I showed no typical symptoms.
Now, over 3 years on, the drip has continued and has been chornic. Thick, sticky mucus in my throat all day, every day. I can either spit it out, swallow it or scoop it out with my tongue and remove it from my tongue with a tissue. The consistency of it is thick, gloopy and sticky. Even once I’ve cleared the mucus I’m able to get rid of, I can still feel it sitting in my throat – too far down for me to get to. This causes a clogged feeling. I’m quite certain it comes from behind my nose as I can feel it initially building up there. It gets worse after eating. It also can occur when I’m doing nothing at all, having not eaten anything. I’ve attempted many times to establish a pattern but at this point have to acknowledge that there isn’t one.
I have been to many different ENTs. I have tried an array of different nasal sprays, saline rinses (with and without biofilm busters mixed in), an upper endoscopy to check for LPR (turns out I don’t have it) and the Clarifix procedure. None of this has helped at all. Quite disheartening, but I’m not giving up hope – I won’t accept that this is going to be for life. There surely must be something that will remedy it. Who knows, maybe an obscure problem requires an obscure remedy. Anyone else suffering with this?”
Excessive this mucus
Okay guys I may have posted this before. I’ve had a PFT twice. One doctor said your lungs are normal. Another doctor said the test was immaculate. My only symptoms are excessive thick mucus all day every day and very bad breath coming from my throat. No cough or shortness of breath.

I ran a search for “cause of long term post nasal drip after a upper respiratory infection”. The above post and response is an example of how clueless and useless doctors are in having solutions for Post Nasal Drip
GERD-like symptoms?
Hello all, I am 23 years old and was told I have GERD as of about 6 months ago. It all started when I went to see my doctor about mucus in my throat that I couldn’t seem to get rid of. I was told it was GERD and was immediately put on Omeprazole once per day.
Per a post in the above article; “I am 23 years old and was told I have GERD as of about 6 months ago. It all started when I went to see my doctor about mucus in my throat that I couldn’t seem to get rid of. I was told it was GERD and was immediately put on Omeprazole once per day. A few weeks later after not much relief I had a scope performed on my throat and stomach and everything came back normal, no ulcers, hernia, or damage to my throat. Before starting the Omeprazole I never had any burning pain in my chest, but now it seems like its very frequent and it still hasn’t done much of anything for the mucus in my throat. I am young, fairly active, never smoked, not overweight, and don’t drink any caffeine so being diagnosed with GERD doesn’t really make sense to me. Now if I try to stop taking Omeprazole I have extremely bad burning in my chest that Zantac cant even help. I also occasionally wipe blood when pooping. I told my doctor but she said it could just be something to do with my acid levels. Is there anything else that could be causing these GERD-like symptoms that I’m missing?”
RESPONSE:
Oct 28, 2019
Hi, i’m new to this so sorry if I miss any points. I’m 19 and used to smoke weed with tobacco daily for around 2-3 years (incase thats relevant). In early 2017 I got sick with a cough and the excess mucus started, but after the cough stopped the sinus issues remained. I didn’t do anything about it for ages because I was super dysfunctional, and only spoke to a GP about it 6 months ago. I tried nasonex but that didn’t really do anything, I’ve now been prescribed antibiotics which has definitely improved it, but the issue clearly remains. It seems to be most problematic further back in my sinuses, mucus is always coming down my throat and I have to blow my nose frequently. Ive had blood tests and have no allergies, and when I got a CT scan (i think that’s what it was) you could clearly see one of my sinuses is much narrower than the other. I’m going back to my GP this week for more antibiotics. Suggestions? And thankyou!!
The above article is another example of how Doctors / ENT’s claiming excessive mucus / phlegm in back of throats of patents is cause by GERD is BULLSHIT, proving doctors making these claims don’t what their talking about and don’t know how to treat this condition. These quack doctors prescribing Omeprazole not only fail to fix the problem, but does more harm than good by causing additional medical problems which the patient didn’t have. After reading this, I’m glad I only took one (1) pill.
Statistics claim Post Nasal Drip affects millions of people around the world. With all the posts on the internet from people who are at their wits end about post nasal drip, it’s inexcusable that medical professionals keep giving patents the wrong diagnosis.
Vasomotor Rhinitis: Symptoms, Causes & Treatment
Vasomotor (nonallergic) rhinitis is inflammation of nasal tissues that results in sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose or postnasal drip.
I began searching for “nonallergic post nasal drip” and began seeing articles like the one above which seems to match my condition.
They state: “Vasomotor (nonallergic) rhinitis is inflammation of nasal tissues that results in sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose or postnasal drip. Unlike allergic rhinitis (or hay fever), the symptoms are of an unknown cause. Likely, they result from triggers that irritate your nose”.
None of the doctors I saw mentioned “nonallergic rhinitis”.
I then ran searches for “nonallergic post nasal drip treatment” and sites like the above came up which mentions procedures such as ClariFix© and RhinAer.
